Isle Royale National Park has once again closed tent and group campsites at four campgrounds after continued wolf activity raised concerns for visitors and their camping equipment.
The closures took effect August 28th and will remain in place through the end of the park season on October 31st. The restrictions apply to Three Mile, Daisy Farm, Moskey Basin and Caribou Island campgrounds.
Tent and hammock camping are prohibited throughout those campgrounds. Off-trail camping zones surrounding the four campgrounds are also closed for the remainder of the season.
The National Park Service said it has continued receiving reports of wolves showing unusual interest in tents. According to the park, wolves have been pawing and digging at tents and entering tents to drag away packs and sleeping pads.
Shelters Remain Available
The closure is limited to 13 tent sites and eight group campsites, along with tent and hammock use at the affected campgrounds. Visitors can still camp in shelters, with 32 shelters remaining available across the four campgrounds.
The restrictions come as Isle Royale prepares for its final weeks of the 2026 camping season. The park is scheduled to close on October 31st.
Isle Royale Strengthens Food Storage Rules
Isle Royale National Park has also taken additional steps to reduce opportunities for wolves and other wildlife to interact with visitor belongings. Over the past month, the park installed a backpack storage cage at Three Mile campground. Visitors are required to store all packs in the cages at Three Mile and Rock Harbor campgrounds.
At every campground in Isle Royale, food, trash and scented items must be kept in food storage lockers or animal resistant, hard sided containers.
The National Park Service is urging visitors to follow food storage requirements while camping in the park. The restrictions are intended to reduce wildlife encounters and help protect both visitors and animals as wolf activity continues to draw attention across Isle Royale.
