Mt. Washington, New Hampshire — It’s springtime, meaning skiers and riders are now frequenting New Hampshire’s backcountry skiing mecca: Tuckerman Ravine. As part of the spring festivities, a new film will be released that details the risks of skiing there.
On Sunday, a trailer was released for a new film about Tuckerman Ravine. Made by Warden Co. and the Mount Washington Avalanche Center, The Proving Ground dives into the risks skiers and riders face when entering this infamous terrain zone.
Situated on Mt. Washington, Tuckerman Ravine is considered the birthplace of extreme skiing due to the descents in the steep bowl in the 1920s and ’30s. Events in the Ravine, most notably the Inferno, have made the event more notorius. Getting there isn’t easy, as it involves a steep 2.4-mile hike just to reach the bowl. From there, the real steepness kicks in. This is a backcountry zone, meaning that many hazards exist. With backcountry skiing on the rise in recent years, increasing the risk of injury, the Mt. Washington Avalanche Center decided it was time to create a new film.

The film will premiere at Ledge Brewing in Interville at 8 pm on Friday. If you can’t make it there, it will also premiere on YouTube on Friday at 8 p.m.
