Killington, Vermont — This weekend is your final chance to ride the Snowdon Triple chairlift.
Yesterday, Killington Resort announced that the Snowdon Triple chairlift will operate for the final time on Saturday, March 21st. It will operate from 9:00 a.m. to 4 p.m., with there being plans to offer donut holes at 9:30 a.m. Each rider tomorrow will be entered into a raffle to win one of the old chairs.
Opened during the 1973-74 season, the Snowdon Triple wasn’t the first lift at Killington, but it’s the oldest operating lift at the massive ski resort. It services Snowdon Mountain, from which you can also reach the top of Snowdon Six. From the mid and top stations, there’s access to intermediate, advanced, and expert trails and glades. People also loved it for the mid-station, which gives convenient access to Highline and Lower Conclusion.
My favorite memory of the lift dates back a few years. I was riding up the lift on a snowy and windy day when it all of a sudden started puking. The lift stopped for a few minutes, leaving an awkward feeling on the chairs. Snowdon eventually restarted, and many had great turns that day.
New Lift & Recent Improvements
The Snowdon Triple is scheduled to be replaced by a new Doppelmayr fixed-grip quad. This will increase capacity and reliability, which is essential on rainier/icier days when the high-speed chairlifts take longer to clean up. This means that fixed-grip chairlifts are essential on wetter days. The old chairs will be auctioned off, with proceeds benefiting the Killington Giving Fund.
Since Killington and Pico were sold in 2024 to local skiers, they have put lots of dough into the place. Upgrades have included replacing the Superstar Express with a six-pack, completing a two-year snowmaking gun project (which added around 1,000 new guns), new cabins for the Skyeship gondola, a reconstructed barn for those carriers, a new surface lift at Pico, replacing the Ledgewood Yurt, and more. A new bike trail is planned to open this summer. Another planned upgrade, an expansion of the Jamaican Jerk Grill, is scheduled to open for the 2027-28 season.
