Jackson Hole skier alertly avoids avalanche

Wyoming — Excellent evasive maneuvers by this backcountry skier in Wyoming who quickly turned into a safety zone and avoided getting dragged over a cliff after triggering an avalanche.

Jason Strong was well aware of a potential avalanche threat before dropping into this line and had an exit strategy for the contingency of a slide. As you can see from the video below, Strong tested the snow’s stability with a hard turn at the top of the face and continued the turn towards the safety zone once he saw the telltale cracks in the surface propagating in front of him:

“I was ready for the line but it wasn’t ready for me! Having a crew of friends in safety response positions and a guide on hand I felt good dropping into this one knowing I could use my turn as a cut just above the upper crux and have a safe spot to bail out to if anything were to happen which it did.” -Jason Strong

“It doesn’t matter if you have made thousands of good calls – all it takes is one bad call and that is one too many. Some days the mountains are screaming GET OUT OF HERE and some days they are saying come on in – it’s time to party.” – Jeremy Jones
