The classic saying about skiing bumps and moguls is as follows: “its not that you can’t ski bumps, its that you can’t ski and the bumps prove it.” If you can rip through the moguls, it means you don’t have the technique down that truly makes you a good skier.
When you can actually ski moguls they’re easily one of the most fun sections of the mountain to rip, so it’s a good idea to take the time to really learn them. This quick and easy drill from Olympic gold medalist and skiing legend Deb Armstrong is a great way to start understanding the rotary feeling required for short turns and moguls.
Once you start to understand that “headlight” rotary feeling that Deb explains you can clip into your skis and try the motion on a low angle groomer, switching from side to side as you make your way down the mountain. Once you’re comfortable there, you can move into some smaller moguls and start working your way up. Once you’ve got the motions down, the bumps will quickly become very fun.
