Deputies with Colorado’s Summit County Sheriff’s Office were called to assist the Town of Breckenridge police officers with a vehicle trespass like few others. Rather than a thief or criminal break-in, the trespasser was a black bear.
The bear had managed to get itself trapped inside the vehicle, causing a large amount of damage and setting off all airbags while struggling inside.
After some planning and problem solving, the crew decided the best course of action would be to break the rear window to provide the animal a safe avenue for escape. The animal was able to get out of the car and scurry off, all without apparent injury.
This incident should serve as a reminder to lock your car doors if you live in bear country. Even though it’s getting colder out, bear season is still not over. Ensure food, trash, bird feeders, and other attractants are locked away and inaccessible, kept indoors overnight, to prevent bears from seeking and accessing food or waste.
