Unnerving discovery made by Swiss freeskier Andri Ragettli who stumbled across a 10-foot deep crevasse in the middle of glacial terrain park in Europe:
“That’s enough for one human to disappear.” -Andri Ragettli
Andri describes the crevasse as “proof you are never safe on a glacier” and we sincerely hope he reported to it resort officials so they could cordon it off appropriately.
While crevasse dangers do exist within the bounds of glacial ski resorts and skiers and snowboarders should always maintain an awareness of the hazards, in most cases ski patrol are aware of them and will clearly mark them to avoid accidents.
The same can not be said for backcountry areas where unmarked crevasses can swallow up skier in a split second. If you plan on crossing glaciers, it is essential to know how to undertake a crevasse rescue. Hopefully you never have to the knowledge and training but it could very well save a life.
