New Zealand โ With inconsistent snowfall throughout this winter in New Zealand, Kiwi backcountry skiers have been eyeing powder skiing for months.
Recent snowfall has brought more people into the backcountry, but that inconsistent snowfall has resulted in an unstable snowpack. This has resulted in various backcountry avalanches, with the most viral one being just outside of Treble Cone.
In a video shared by NZ Avalanche Advisory, Jeremy Blake shared that four backcountry skiers triggered a slide. Three individuals were caught in the slide, and one of them was caught up to their waist. Luckily, nobody was injured in the slide.
It’s a great reminder for backcountry skiers to be aware of the snowpack and ride with friends. Ultimately, the NZ Avalanche Advisory is asking skiers and riders to use extreme caution in the backcountry due to the new snow, recent heavy winds, and the current persistent slab in the snowpack.
