Road kill is a frequent sight along highways and freeways across the United States. Well over 1 million large mammals are killed on roads in the country every year, and according to the Federal Highway Administration, an estimated 365 million vertebrates are road-killed annually in America.

In response to the number of slaughtered animals found along our roads and other blocks preventing animals from reaching their natural breeding grounds or completing their annual migrations, people have begun building several different types of bridges to help wildlife reach their target destination.

The most well known is the wildlife overpass, allowing large and small animals alike to cross busy highways without the risk of incoming traffic, but there are plenty of other wild and fascinating modes of transportations that we’ve created for wildlife. Minute Earth took a look at 5 of these wild bridges.
