The jury is still out as to what this San Diego surf instructor was sharing the water with while riding a wave southern California. The mystery surrounding surf instructor Ryland Rubens’ chance encounter with this shadowy figure has sparked rampant online speculation as to it origins.

The theories about the nature of the mysterious object are wildly varied. Many are quick to point out the ambiguous shape is likely kelp formation, a common enough sight in local waters, but some have suggested it could be something more fantastical such as an underwater pterodactyl or a USO (unidentified submerged object or USO) indicating the presence of alien technology beneath the waves.
