Shrewsbury, Massachusetts—A snowmaking push is happening at one ski area in North America, but it’s probably somewhere you don’t expect it to be.
Ski Ward has been pushing out a massive snow pile thanks to an innovative snowmaking machine. Their Latitude 90 & SMI snowmaking system helps make snow in warmer temperatures, which has allowed Ski Ward to make some man-made snow.
This helped them be the first in North America to operate for lift-serviced skiing and riding during the 2023-24 season. While others have made snow this season, Ski Ward has a sizeable mound of snow on its beginner slope.
For this winter, the Massachusetts ski area plans to open on November 1st for lessons and offer after-school programs for skiing and snowboarding. On November 2nd, Ski Ward will host an evening rail jam. Registration/check-in will start at 5:30 p.m., practicing on the slope will begin at 6 p.m., the competition will start at 7 p.m., and they’ll conclude the evening with awards and giveaways at 9 p.m.
Registration for the event is now available, with tickets costing $20.
They briefly opened for one day in October last year, so we’ll see whether Ski Ward opens this month. One thing is for certain: the race to open for skiing and riding in North America is heating up.
