A Mumps outbreak in Colorado has been linked to Arapahoe Basin Ski Resort. Six cases of mumps have been identified so far among people associated with or employed by Arapahoe Basin Ski Area.
“Arapahoe Basin has been fully cooperating and closely coordinating with Summit County Public Health to support affected employees and protect all staff and the public,” said Sara Lopez, nursing manager for Summit County Public Health.
Even though the vaccine has drastically reduced mumps cases, outbreaks still occur. Outbreaks have most commonly occurred among groups of people who have prolonged, close contact, such as sharing water bottles or cups, kissing, practicing sports together, or living in close quarters, with a person who has mumps. Some vaccinated people may still get mumps if they are exposed to the virus. However, disease symptoms are milder in vaccinated people.
Health officials are asking people who have symptoms to consult with their health care provider or call Summit County Public Health at 970-668-9161.
