This is absolutely bizarre. According to Geomicrobiologist (also the best job title in the world), Jill Mikucki is saying that fissures within a 1,300′ tall Antartic glacier are to blame for releasing “blood red” microbes from an underground lake. This release creates what looks like a bloody waterfall, cascading over the icy glacier terminus. The lake, which is referred to as a “brine lake,” is too salty to freeze.
And even in such harsh conditions, the microbes are STILL ALIVE after 3 million years!
These microscopic organisms may even be the oldest organisms on earth and their appearance may give scientists a view into what life would look like beneath the icy caps of Mars.
