Officers search for a mountain lion near St. Mary's Glacier in Colorado.

Last Thursday, April 2nd, Clear Creek County Sheriff’s Office in Colorado was alerted to a report of two campers allegedly being stalked by a mountain lion at St. Mary’s Glacier. The report came in around 10pm, and Clear Creek County officers were deployed to the scene to conduct a backcountry rescue.

Sgt. Aab and Deputy Bertrand met one of the campers, who had left the campsite to seek help, at the trailhead parking lot. The three individuals utilized an ATV to get as far up the trail as they could, then had to hike a mile further to reach the other camper. The second camper had hunkered in his tent to avoid the mountain lion.

Despite the rocky terrain, cold weather, snow, and wind, the officers were able to scare off any mountain lions and bring the other camper down to safety. No cat was actually spotted throughout the rescue.
