A hiker on Lookout Mountain in Arizona suffered a rather unique and terrifying injury on Saturday, April 4th, near the summit.

According to the Phoenix Fire Department, technical rescue teams from Phoenix and Glendale responded to reports of a hiker stung multiple times by bees near the summit of the mountain. Crews were able to locate the man who reported over 100 stings and could not continue making his way down the mountain.

A hoist operation was coordinated with Firebird 10 to safely extract the patient. He was then transferred to an awaiting ambulance at the trailhead and brought to a hospital in critical condition.

The Phoenix Fire Department reminds the public to avoid disturbing bee hives. Additionally, recreators can avoid being stung by skipping scented products while outside and wearing light-colored clothing. If you do encounter a swarm, run away quickly and protect your head and face.
