Vermont — While it was a successful season at Pico thanks to various upgrades, its oldest lift appears to be heading towards retirement.

Yesterday, Pico Mountain announced that the Outpost Double chairlift is now closed for good. Earlier this ski season, it experienced a main drive-shaft failure. After further review, an engineering analysis revealed that further repairs are no longer possible.

Installed in 1969, the fixed-grip double chairlift was supplied by Carlevaro & Savio. The Italian company was known for its gondolas at places like Mt. Snow, Sugarbush, and Wildcat. Unfortunately, this chairlift is the last of its kind in North America, making parts difficult to find. It served a small terrain pod that includes intermediate and advanced trails. While these runs are short, they are a bunch of fun. The old chairs will be auctioned off later this year.

Future Plans

The good news is that Killington has wealthy new owners who have been investing their money into the two ski resorts. This includes Pico, which saw improvements in its beginner area for the winter of 2025-26. The Bonanza double chairlift, which was actually from the same lift manufacturer, was replaced with a conveyor lift. This made it easier for beginner guests and adaptive skiers to use. The surrounding terrain was also regraded for a better learning experience.

The problem the new owners have been dealing with is Vermont’s Act 250 process, which has delayed some projects, including the addition of a new mountain biking trail at Killington. One consideration is a temporary fix, as a rope tow could provide access to this terrain zone. A more permanent fix, such as a chairlift, won’t be in place for the 2026-27 season.

We’ll keep you posted on Pico’s plan for the Outpost terrain pod.
