Yellowstone National Park has entered the final phase of its $118 million Northeast Entrance project, dismantling the 65-year-old Yellowstone River Bridge now that its replacement is complete.

“If you’ve been out to Lamar Valley lately, you might’ve noticed the old Yellowstone River Bridge being removed! This major Great American Outdoors Act project is in its final phase as crews work on overlooks, remove the old bridge, and restore the Lost Creek drainage. The full project is expected to be complete later this year.” -Yellowstone National Park

Crews are currently removing the old bridge’s 604-foot concrete deck, followed by its steel and concrete supports, with work expected to wrap up by the end of the year. The new bridge opened in November 2025. It stretches 1,285 feet and stands 180 feet above the river, making it the second-tallest bridge in the park. Designed to improve safety and reduce environmental impact, the structure maintains a more level grade for year-round travel and is expected to last 75 to 100 years.

With the old bridge removed, crews will restore the surrounding landscape, including returning the Lost Creek drainage to its natural state. The project also includes new overlooks, parking areas and a trail offering views of the Yellowstone River canyon, with minimal impact expected to traffic during the 2026 summer season.
