Tough break for American ski racer Mikaela Shiffrin who unfortunately somehow cracked her World Cup Crystal Globe trophy in half. Some questioned if the picture she posted was an April Fools gag but unfortunately it really happened.
No doubt it will get professionally repaired and the blemish won’t be too noticeable but it may stand out next to her five other pristine globes, that’s right this one represents her sixth World Cup overall victory. In the comment section someone asked what caused the snapped glass and Shiffrin hit them with a zinger:
“Jon Hamm looked at it.” -Mikaela Shiffrin
The Crystal Globe is the most recognizable trophies in all of alpine ski racing, awarded each season to the top performers on the FIS Alpine Ski World Cup circuit. The trophies are hand-blown crystal produced in Italy by a company called G.D.E. Bertoni. The globes are known for their weight and craftsmanship but apparently not their durability.
While the real cause of the fracture is unclear, Shiffrin has been playing pretty fast and loose with the hardware. Check out this vid she shared of her prize going to through TSA security:
