MONTROSE, Colo. — The 40-year-old man who died at the Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park in Colorado on March 24, 2026 has been identified as Paul J. Shallcross, of Denver.

Montrose County Coroner reports visitors to the park reported seeing body approximately 800 feet down from the Gunnison Point Overlook on the South Rim. National Park Service Rangers responded to the area and climbed to the scene and did not find signs of life. The next day, the man’s body was transported to the Montrose County Coroner’s office.

An autopsy was completed, but his cause and manner of death remain under investigation at this time.
