In what you probably think is an April Fool’s joke, but actually is real, there’s a new ski boot that claims it could change the industry.

Last week, zUFO SkiBoots released a video showcasing a potential new ski boot that features a few key differences from modern products skiers have grown used to.

At this point, ski boots are mostly regarded as heavy and uncomfortable to wear. Given that people’s feet differ, zUFO argues that ski boots are poorly suited to skiers’ needs.

The zUFO lacks a hard shell but features the same structure as the traditional ski boot. Its key argument is that the hard shell makes them uncomfortable to wear and that they’re not eco-friendly to dispose of. Their new boot is supposed to be not only comfortable to wear but also to have no effect on performance or flex.

“At ZUFO, we believe that boldness and generosity can transform even the most rigid industries. Starting from scratch, we have reinvented ski boots to make skiing enjoyable for all skiers, said Hervé FREDOUILLE, the founder of zUFO. “By freeing ourselves from the rigid shell, we offer a skiing experience without compromising on comfort or performance.”

Led by Hervé, they’ve been working since 2020 to develop these ski boots. In 2023, it won the Innovation Award at CES Las Vegas. Over the past few years, they’ve been testing the prototype, selecting manufacturers, and preparing for industrialization.

There are, of course, skeptics of this ski boot, as there should be. Some are concerned that without the hard shell, it won’t protect skiers from crashes. Another concern is whether the boots are more affected by colder weather. zUFO said they didn’t encounter these issues during testing.

It reminds me of some other unique ski products recently released, like the Frigid Dynamics ski and ShredShox. Ski boots have also seen recent innovations, such as the adoption of BOA, but this would be a monumental change for the industry if it proves successful. It reminds me of the Apex ski boot, which focuses on comfort but has drawn criticism for its performance. zUFO noted to a skeptic that the key difference between them and Apex is that their exoskeleton separates foam from force transmission for precise, unaltered control. Consider me skeptical, but also intrigued.

According to their website, they’re aiming to launch pre-orders this year or next.
