FRANCONIA, N.H. — A snowboarder was seriously injured yesterday after crashing into a tree in an out-of-bounds area at Cannon Mountain Ski Resort. New Hampshire Fish and Game conservation officers were notified around 4:30 p.m. Monday of the injured rider outside the resort’s maintained terrain.

The snowboarder, identified as Ethan Haust, 36, of Ashland, had been riding with friends before the group entered an unpatrolled area to finish the day. Officials said Haust caught an edge while navigating steep, rocky terrain and collided with a tree.

Unable to move, the group called for help. Cannon Mountain ski patrol responded and provided medical aid before requesting assistance from Fish and Game. Conservation officers and the Pemigewasset Valley Search and Rescue Team used ropes to evacuate Haust from the steep terrain. He was transported to the base area and taken by private vehicle to a hospital for treatment.
