On Tuesday, March 24th, 2026, around 8:40am, Montrose County Sheriff’s Office deputies were dispatched to the Visitor Center at Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park in relation to a deceased male found in the park.

After speaking with possible witnesses upon arrival, deputies were informed that the deceased male was in the canyon below a lookout area just north of the visitor center. The individual was a white male in his early 40s who had arrived at the location in a vehicle, most likely the night before.

The case is currently under investigation in coordination with the Montrose County Coroner’s Office. It’s currently unknown how or why the individual was in the location in Black Canyon of the Gunnison where he was found.

At this time there’s no information to suggest anyone else was involved.
