Coronado National Forest, Arizona — Few people know about the southernmost ski area in the country. Located around 41 miles outside downtown Tucson, Mount Lemmon Ski Valley has been a community staple since the late 1940s. It sits at approximately the same latitude as Dallas, Texas, which is only about 80 miles from the border with Mexico.

The ski area is known for its varied terrain and diverse food offerings, including 10 different flavors of homemade fudge. During the offseason, it remains open for scenic chairlift rides that showcase incredible views. This five-minute video covers Mount Lemmon Ski Valley’s geographical uniqueness, the ski area’s history, the guest experience, and the challenges posed by its remote location.

Mount Lemmon is currently closed, and it’s unclear whether it operated this winter. When it operates, it operates most days except for Tuesdays and Wednesdays. If you’re looking forward to a bit of fudge with your skiing, make sure to call first, as the fudge shop may be closed due to staffing shortages.
