Mikaela Shiffrin wins sixth women’s overall World Cup title

HAFJELL, Norway — Congratulations to Mikaela Shiffrin who secured a record-tying sixth women’s overall World Cup title Wednesday, holding off a challenge from Germany’s Emma Aicher in the final race of the season.

Shiffrin needed only a top-15 finish in the giant slalom to clinch the title and achieved that before Aicher began her second run.

The 31-year-old American matched Austrian great Annemarie Moser-Pröll, who won six overall titles in the 1970s. Moser-Pröll captured five straight titles from 1971-75 and added a sixth in 1979, while Shiffrin won three consecutive titles from 2017-19 and additional titles in 2022 and 2023.

Shiffrin capped another dominant season that included her third Olympic gold medal, winning the slalom at the Milan-Cortina Games. She also won nine of 10 World Cup slalom races this season and holds a record 110 career World Cup victories across all disciplines, the most by any skier. Sweden’s Ingemar Stenmark is second with 86 wins.
