Spring plowing operations @ Yellowstone National Park

Yellowstone National Park — As the winter visitation season ends at Yellowstone National Park, spring plowing operations have commenced. To prepare for the upcoming peak season, Yellowstone road crews spend about 3 months plowing over 180 miles of park roads that have been compacted with a winter’s worth of snow. Here’s a quick peek at what Yellowstone’s crews face while they get the roads ready for the busy summer season.

Spring plowing season at Yellowstone happens to coincide with the park’s resident bear population emerging from their months-long hibernation and park officials want to remind visitors to be bear aware:

“It’s time to be bear aware. All of Yellowstone is bear country – from the park’s backcountry to the boardwalks and parking lots around Old Faithful. So be sure to hike in groups of three or more, carry bear spray (and know how to use it!), and always stay at least 100 yards (91 m) away from bears.”
