High winds were present during the fatal gondola crash in Switzerland.

On Wednesday, March 18th, a gondola cabin fell off the cable and crashed down the mountain at Switzerland’s Engelberg-Titlis Ski Resort, killing a 61-year-old woman from the area. The cause of the accident is still under investigation, though it is evident that wind gusts as high as 50mph were slamming the mountain at the time.

Footage from people on the mountain that day shows just how dramatic the wind was, forcing the cancellation of a ski race and causing gondola cabins and chairlifts to swing wildly.

Between 100 and 200 gondola passengers were forced to wait for evacuation following the accident, with the cable car coming to a stop after the crash. It’s not clear at this point exactly how the cabin managed to come detached, but the incident is still under investigation.
