ASTORIA, Ore. — A U.S. Coast Guard helicopter crew rescued a hiker stranded on a cliffside at God’s Thumb near Lincoln City on Saturday, officials said.

Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Columbia River were notified by North Lincoln Fire and Rescue, which requested assistance after determining it could not safely conduct a high-angle rescue at the scene.

An Airbuss MH-65 Dolphin Helicopter crew from Air Facility Newport responded and successfully hoisted the hiker from the cliff. The individual was transported to Samaritan North Lincoln Hospital for treatment of minor injuries. Officials said the rescue highlighted coordination between local emergency responders and the Coast Guard.

“This case was a great example of our strong partnership with Lincoln County Fire and Rescue. We’re happy the individual was reunited with his family.” -Flight Mechanic, Petty Officer Second Class Gavin Battle
