Big Sky, Montana — Big Sky Resort’s expert terrain is no joke, as it’s one of the few ski resorts that’s home to triple black diamonds. Much of their double- and triple-black-diamond terrain has no fall zones, which are meant to indicate the risks of taking it on.
YouTuber Ched Cant Cork found that out the hard way earlier this month while he was traversing Headwaters’ Ridge. Ched is an experienced skier and had been in this terrain zone beforehand. However, the difference was that the traverse had become much firmer. It was also a windy day, increasing the risk of falling. If he fell, the end result wouldn’t have been pretty. YouTube titles can be pretty dramatic sometimes, but I believe he’s being truthful here.
Here’s his description of his taste of death:
“This is one of the scariest moments of my life. The wind from the last few days had removed a majority of the snowpack along the headwaters ridge and the bootpack or what was left, had turned to pretty much ice. We were lucky to make it out alive today. The footage does not give much justice to the multiple thousand foot drop right next to the foot wide bootpack lol.”
Since this footage was recorded, Big Sky has seen a decent amount of snowfall, which may have helped out conditions.
