ÅRE, Sweden — Mikaela Shiffrin won the women’s World Cup slalom Sunday, securing her eighth victory of the season and the 109th World Cup win of her career.

Shiffrin finished the race in 1 minute, 43.35 seconds, beating Germany’s Emma Aicher by 0.94 seconds. Switzerland’s Wendy Holdener finished third, exactly one second behind Shiffrin. The race marked the final World Cup event before the season-ending World Cup Finals.

The victory ties the record for most wins in a single season by a female skier, a mark Shiffrin previously set during the 2018-19 season and one also achieved by Croatia’s Janica Kostelic in 2000-01. Shiffrin can break the record outright at the World Cup Finals slalom scheduled for March 24 in Lillehammer, Norway.

Shiffrin’s latest win was her 72nd career World Cup victory in slalom alone. The 31-year-old American has already secured the season’s slalom title and currently leads the overall World Cup standings with 1,286 points, holding a 140-point advantage over Aicher.

Four races remain in the season — downhill, super-G, giant slalom and slalom — all scheduled to take place at the World Cup Finals.
