BIG SKY, Mont. — Big Sky Resort has introduced a new on-mountain attraction this winter: an igloo bar built entirely from snow and ice at an elevation of about 9,000 feet.
Located near the top of the Explore Gondola, the structure was created to enhance the guest experience and provide a unique high-alpine gathering spot for skiers and snowboarders. The Iglu opened on January 24th, 2026 and features seating areas outside with sweeping mountain views as well as an interior bar carved from ice.
The concept draws inspiration from European alpine ski culture, where snow-built igloos and ice bars are common at après-ski destinations in countries such as Switzerland and France.
The structure was built earlier this winter using a balloon mold that is inflated and then covered with layers of blown snow. Over roughly 10 days, the snow compacts and freezes into thick walls of ice, eventually forming a dome with walls that reach about 12 to 15 feet thick.
Because the igloo is constructed entirely from snow and ice, it will melt when temperatures rise at the end of the ski season. Resort officials say the structure is designed to be rebuilt each winter, making it a seasonal attraction that returns with the snow.
ABOUT IGLU:
An architectural installation carved from snow and ice at the base of the Lone Peak Tram. Surprisingly warm inside, design-forward and welcoming. The on-slope experience, reimagined.
Whether you’re gathering before the ascent or toasting after, Iglu is where the moment takes shape. Champagne, Montana craft beers, specialty drinks, and hot cocoa — with seating for 60 inside and more outside beneath the majesty of Lone Peak.
Designed in partnership with Arhaus, the interior brings heirloom-quality craftsmanship and sustainably sourced materials to one of the resort’s most distinctive venues.
