Several people were spotted skinning up Colorado’s Quandry Peak when an avalanche was reported last week, prompting a helicopter response from authorities.
According to the Summit County Sheriff’s Office, deputies requested a helicopter to fly over an see if all tracks going into the slide also came out of the slide. At the same time, Summit County Rescue Group began putting together a search team in case their assistance was required.
Shortly after, the helicopter did determine that all tracks heading into the avalanche debris came out at the bottom, leading officials to believe there were no buriels. Summit County Rescue Group stood down their search team.
Quandary Peak is one of Colorado’s many 14,000 foot mountains, stretching to 14,271Â feet. It is one of the most frequently climbed Fourteeners in the state, often being considered one of the easier, least technical to summit. It’s also a fairly frequently skied summit, especially when the avalanche danger is lower.
With any backcountry skiing or snowboarding, it’s vital that you check the avalanche forecast before heading out. Ensure that you’re prepared with the proper experience, education, and gear, including a beacon, shovel, and probe.
