DESCHUTES COUNTY, Ore. — A 65-year-old Portland man died Monday after a skiing accident at Mt. Bachelor, according to the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office.

Mt. Bachelor Ski Patrol received a report of an injured skier on the Wanoga Way Ski Trail at about 2:22pm on March 9th, 2026. Ski patrollers arrived first and found the man without a pulse and not breathing.

Despite extensive resuscitation efforts by ski patrol and Bend Fire & Rescue medics, the skier was pronounced dead at 2:56 p.m.

Authorities identified the skier as Nigel Barry Young of Portland. Investigators said Young was skiing with three friends who were ahead of him and did not witness the crash. Young was wearing a helmet at the time of the incident, but deputies said his injuries were not survivable.

The Wanoga Way Ski Trail is located on the east side of Mt. Bachelor off the Cloudchaser Lift and is considered an intermediate run. The Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office is working with Mt. Bachelor staff to complete the investigation.
