Cheers to all the participants who raced at the 19th Annual Fire Hose Ski Race at Arapahoe Basin but a special shoutout is needed for Summit Fire & EMS Team 1 out of Frisco, Colorado who beat out over 30 teams to take home the trophy and secure bragging rights for a full year with an ultra speedy time of 43.5 seconds down the GS course.
The unique tradition involves teams of five skiers and or snowboarders spaced along a 50-foot fire hose who have to navigate a 15-gate giant slalom course while carrying the hose. Adding to the already challenging task, every team member must wear a bunker coat and a fire helmet. Each team completes two runs, and the fastest single run time wins the event. The victorious team is awarded the coveted traveling Fire Hose Race Trophy to display at their firehouse until the next year’s competition.
The event benefits No Ordinary Camps, a pediatric burn camp program supported by Children’s Hospital. Proceeds from this event will ensure that no child is turned away due to financial circumstances and help sustain year-round programming that empowers burn survivors to build confidence, friendships, and hope.
Tip of the fire helmet to Wildland Operations Specialist Doug Lesch (team captain), Engineer Frank Towers, Fire-Medic Mac Smith, Firefighter Jerry Tofferi and Wildland Fuels Crew Lead Matt Gerjol for taking home the top prize. Check out their winning run below and if you would like to donate to No Ordinary Camps please do so HERE.

About The Burn Camps Program & The Annual Fire Hose Relay:
The Burn Camps Program, established in 1983, addresses the psychological and rehabilitation needs of children and families following burn injuries. After a burn injury, children often face extensive reconstructive surgeries and ongoing physical and occupational therapy. The Burn Camps Program has evolved into a series of camp programs that provide challenging activities and foster lasting friendships and mentorships, helping children thrive beyond their injuries.

One of the most exciting events supporting this program is the Fire Hose Race. This unique race features over 30 teams of five skiers, each spaced along a 50-foot fire hose. Teams work together to navigate a 15-gate giant slalom course while carrying the hose. Adding to the challenge, every team member must wear a bunker coat and a fire helmet. Teams may consist of skiers, snowboarders, or a mix of both. Each team completes two runs, and the fastest single run time wins the event. The victorious team is awarded the coveted traveling Fire Hose Race Trophy to display until the next year’s competition.

This thrilling event directly supports the Burn Camps Program. With every $1,650 raised, 100% of the cost is covered for one child to attend a week-long summer camp. These camps are life-changing experiences that empower children to regain confidence, connect with peers who have shared similar experiences, and embrace new challenges in a supportive environment.
