Des Moines, Iowa — Sleepy Hollow Sports Park is a ski area that’s somewhat operational. A portion of the hill has been converted into a synthetic ski slope, which opened in 2024. However, its lift-served skiing operation hasn’t been open since the early 2020s. However, Polk County Conservation is working to change that.
KCCI Des Moines 8 reports that Polk County Conservation is aiming to raise $10 million to bring back downhill skiing to Sleepy Hollow.
The plans include a new chairlift and snowmaking infrastructure. At this point, both the lift and snowmaking infrastructure are inoperable. A new base lodge is also planned, which I don’t really get because the current one looks pretty nice. Other activities are also planned to expand the area’s use.
The county is hoping to secure grants to support these developments and to secure final financial support from local companies. The plan is to eventually ask for support from individual donors.
For now, the synthetic ski slope plans to operate extensively this year. They will have skiing on the slope in March and April, and again in the fall. During the summer months, snow tubing will be offered. A ski shop is also available for those who are looking to get their gear sharpened and waxed.
