When you think of winter cities, Denver might not be way up there on your list. Buffalo, Anchorage, and several others probably sit quite a bit higher. But Denver still tends to get some solid snowfall throughout a winter, with an average of 56.9 inches falling downtown. This year is looking quite a bit different, though.

The seasonal normal snowfall total at Denver International Airport is around 47 inches, or just under 4 feet. This year, just 13.4 inches have fallen so far, way below the average for this time of year. In fact, when looking at the recent storm that slammed the East Coast, Philadelphia, Boston, and New York City all saw more snow in an 18-hour period than Denver has seen all winter.

For Boston, that’s not that wild, but when you learn that Philadelphia generally sees an average of just 21.7 inches of snow in a year, it starts to get a bit more shocking. Of course this storm was a pretty unique one, marking the largest to hit New York City since 2016 (and the 9th largest in recorded history). There’s still a fair chunk of winter left, so the question now is whether or not Denver will see any more snow before the summer rolls around.
