Deep snow immersion and snow immersion suffocation is most commonly associated with tree wells, but any time there’s a lot of powder you run the risk of immersion. This case at Palisades Tahoe really demonstrates that danger.
Filmed last Wednesday, February 18th, a day where Palisades was getting hammered with a lot of snow, the video shows the moment two skiers spotted the ski tips of an individual near completely buried. In the heavy snow conditions, it’s truly a miracle that these guys just happened to stop right where this guy was stuck.
When a person falls into deep unconsolidated snow and becomes immobilized, they run the risk of suffocation if they aren’t assisted. It’s vital that you always ski or snowboard with a partner to reduce the risk of Snow Immersion Suffactions.
It is extremely important to keep Snow Immersion Suffocation (SIS) safety at the forefront of your mind. Always remember:
• Ride with a partner
• Avoid the base of trees when skiing & riding in deep snow
• If you are going to fall, attempt to do so feet first
• The more snow, the higher the risk
