Wofford Heights, California — Running a ski area in Southern California can be challenging due to the inconsistent snowfall. That’s especially true if you don’t have snowmaking capabilities.
That’s the case for Alta Sierra, which last operated in February 2024. Issues over the past several years, such as a lack of natural snowfall, have kept the mountain closed to skiing and riding. However, the tide has turned.
Yesterday, Alta Sierra announced that they’ll reopen this weekend. This is thanks to 15-18 inches of new snow that has arrived so far, with more snow on the way. It has yet to be determined whether their snow tubing park will operate. The plan is to operate on Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The ticket office will start distributing wickets at 8 a.m.
About Alta Sierra
Once known as Shirley Meadows Ski Area, Alta Sierra is situated in the Sequoia National Forest. The closest major city to Alta Sierra is Bakersfield, which is around 50 miles away. During an ideal ski season, their operating schedule is typically from late December to late March on weekends and holidays. The ski area ultimately lets snowboarders say they shredded at Alta… just not at the Utah mountain.
