Slide outs on Donner Summit in California.

If you’re hoping to make your way to or from the Tahoe area today, you’d better reconsider. Interstate 80 is closed to Big Rigs in both directions and to all traffic westbound at Stateline thanks to spin outs, heavy snow and zero visibility.

According to the California Department of Transportation, I-80 is closed westbound at the Nevada-California state line, while eastbound is closed to all tractor-semitrailer combinations at Applegate.

All vehicles except 4-wheel-drive vehicles with snow tires on all 4 wheels are required to have chains from 3.4 mi east of Gold Run to the Nevada State Line.

The area around Donner Summit is expected to see feet of snow over the next several days, with some areas potentially reaching to 5-7 feet before Friday. The National Weather Service highly recommends against travel unless absolutely necessary.
