Santa Cruz, CA — Kudos to this crew of surfers who came to the aid of a family in distress after their boat was capsized by a large wave in Santa Cruz, California. One of the surfers was recording his surf session with a GoPro camera and captured the entire rescue on video.

The dramatic footage shows the real-life heroism of the local surfers, including a 14-year-old Ian Anderson, courageously rescuing a child and other family members after their small boat overturned near the iconic Steamer Lane surf break over the weekend.

Santa Cruz Fire Chief Rob Oatey has publicly recognized the actions of Anderson and other surfers, noting that their quick response helped prevent what could have become a far more serious tragedy. City officials are currently considering a community event or ceremony to honor those involved.

“We’re incredibly proud of the quick instincts and selfless actions shown by these surfers, especially someone so young. Their willingness to help in an emergency made all the difference.” -Chief Oatey
