Europe has gotten some pretty remarkable snowfall in the past several days, with feet of snow falling at several resorts and skyrocketing the avalanche danger. The snow has been so deep, in fact, that some ski resorts were forced to completely close during avalanche mitigation.
At what appears to be Switzerland’s Regions Dents du Midi, a part of the Portes du Soleil interconnected ski resort network, avalanche mitigation released a pretty wild slide that ripped across a cat track. There was nobody below when the slide released, aside from what looks to be a patroller tucked in a safe area. This video demonstrates successful mitigation.
According to the video description, the recent, significant accumulations combined with weak base layers and wind and overloading lead to the slide, in addition to the active mitigation work designed to keep the mountain safe for both skiers and staff.
