Wilmington, Vermont โ Private ski resorts tend to keep the public away from the mountain. So it’s surprising that one is offering a free day of skiing not only to their local community but also to basically anybody.
Last week, the Hermitage Club announced that they’re offering $49 lift tickets (plus taxes) to the skiing community on February 2nd. This offer was available not only to locals but to anyone who skis or rides. The proceeds go to the Deerfield Valley Food Pantry, Deerfield Valley Rescue, and Deerfield Valley Community Cares. Previously, these public days were only open to local residents. This season may be the first time it’s been offered to the general public since Haystack became a private ski resort.
The bad news? The tickets already sold out. Sorry, fam, I didn’t get a ticket either.
They’re not the only one that offers public access. There are public ski resorts that offer private options (facilities and lifts), such as Powder Mountain and the Windham Mountain Club. Another example is the private ski resort Holimont, which offers public skiing on Mondays through Thursdays. There are also private ski areas with affordable membership, such as Mount Greylock in Massachusetts and Meany Lodge in Washington. Then there are the expensive private resorts that require being a member or knowing someone. In terms of public access to a private ski resort, this day at Hermitage may be the best offering.
I feel like this is one of the things that distinguishes the Hermitage Club since its new ownership took over in 2020. The previous iteration of this private ski resort resulted in bankruptcy. Better community stewardship and focus on guests have made for a great experience for members and the local community.
