A powerful cyclone from the Sea of Okhotsk hit Russia’s far eastern Kamchatka Peninsula bringing strong winds and the heaviest snowfall in 60 years. Public transportation was partially suspended in the regional capital, Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, as city buses were swapped out for all-terrain vehicles to shuttle residents along the city’s snow laden main routes.

While heavy snow is not uncommon for Kamchatka, the suddenness and intensity of the storm has paralyzed the region with schools and businesses forced to closed and residents beginning to report that store are running out of essential foods.
Snow falling from the roofs of buildings, also known as roof-alanches, have killed two people and the entire area has been placed under emergency status.
