Cuchara, Colorado — This weekend is your first chance to experience the first lift-served skiing at Cuchara Mountain in nearly 26 years.
After receiving approval to operate Lift 4 last month, Cuchara Mountain Park has announced that it will open this weekend (January 17 and 18) for skiing and riding. Lift tickets will only cost $45, a bargain compared to what you paid at other ski resorts in Colorado.
Cuchara Mountain first opened as a ski resort back in the 1980s. Various Texas developers tried and failed to make the operation work. It closed in 2000, and the mountain sat abandoned. In 2017, Huerfano County purchased the land. They gave it to the Cuchara Foundation, which became the non-profit that aimed to revitalize the area into a four-season destination.
Over the past few years, the Panadero Ski Corporation (the non-profit ski operator) has been working on bringing lift-served skiing. Over the past few winters, they used a snowcat to service the Lift 4 terrain pod. Skinners are also allowed on the property, as they can access all the old terrain. They have hinted at bringing additional lifts online in the future, but the key focus right now is creating a viable business around Lift 4.
Congrats to the crew over at Cuchara Mountain Park for all their hard work. Based on its history and importance to the community, this place should be on everyone’s bucket list for ski adventures in the years ahead.
