Tahoe — It’s no secret that Tahoe has a housing crisis. But as is the case nationwide, it’s challenging to diagnose and solve. What are the causes, and what are the solutions?

Recently, the 2023 film Room and Board: Tahoe Housing Crisis Documentary was released on YouTube. It’s garnered over thirty-thousand views, showing that its message still resonates with locals and ski bums.

During the winter of 2021/2022, a group of North Lake Tahoe-based skiers, snowboarders, and filmmakers came together to explore the causes of the immediate housing shortages affecting their mountain town community.

Motivated by their personal passion for skiing and snowboarding, they chose to focus on others who share that same love for the mountains, many of whom are struggling to stay in the places they call home. The film was completed in 2023, and it made its debut at a film festival and screening tours from 2023 to 2024. It even had a showing in a beach resort town in Australia.

As you may have guessed, the problems still persist in the Tahoe region. Many homes are still unoccupied, as workers face daily challenges to live there.

“80% of the homes in Incline are unoccupied, we just hope some of those [homeowners] are watching.” said Cedar Gately, editor of the film.

Unofficial Networks readers played a big part in helping make this film. In 2022, we shared news of the film’s production, and many readers donated to the GoFundMe campaign to help bring it to life.

“The Room and Board team would like to thank Unofficial Networks for sharing our initial film fundraiser. Thank you to the Unofficial Networks readers who donated — We would not have been able to make this film without you.”
