Rendering of the final Floyd Hill I-70 project.

Construction on the Floyd Hill section of Colorado’s I-70 feels like it stated ages ago, and yet it still seems like there’s no end in sight. Blast closures, narrowed lanes, lane shifts, and weird lines all along one of the most notorious sections of the highway make for some seriously tense driving. Fortunately there is an end coming and the Colorado Department of Transportation recently provided a flyover rendering of what the final product is meant to look like, but you’ll have to wait until 2029 to actually se it in person.

The 8-mile long improvement project runs from east of Evergreen to eastern Idaho Springs, Colorado. It will widen the roadway and lanes, adding a new Express Lane to westbound I-70 and an eastbound climbing lane from US 6. It will also add a new westbound off-ramp to US 6 and relocate the US 6 westbound on-ramp to the Hidden Valley/Central City Parkway interchange.

Westbound I-70’s new alignment is set to be complete by the end of 2027, while eastbound I-70 should be complete by the end of 2028. The entire project, including environmental mitigation, trail improvements, bridges, and more, are meant to be completed in 2029.
