Japan โ Situated a 45-minute drive from a powder mecca is a partially abandoned ski resort with a fascinating history.
In this video by Blaize Kelly, he explores a ski resort that has sat abandoned since its transition to a mostly backcountry skiing operation. On his way down, he experiences a mix of conditions, resulting in some spicy turns. This was during a rainy stretch for Japan, which led to undesirable conditions. Still, it’s a cool look at a unique skiing operation in Japan.
About Iwanai Ski Resort
Located around 45 minutes from Niseko, Iwanai is known for its upper-mountain bowl skiing and views of the Sea of Japan. The ski resort changed ownership in 2001, when it converted from a solely lift-serviced operation to a focus on cat-skiing and backcountry. There is one chairlift that reportedly still operates, but it’s limited to the lower mountain. The other lifts and buildings are abandoned.
The varying weather patterns were likely one of the causes why the fully-fledged ski resort never worked out. However, when conditions are good, it offers an intriguing option for those seeking more than the traditional experience at Niseko.
