A 59-year-old male backcountry skier was rescued yesterday after falling while skiing in between Little Cottonwood Canyon and Big Cottonwood Canyon.

The Salt Lake County Sheriff’s Office’s search and rescue team responded to the Little Cottonwood side and a helicopter from the Utah Department of Public Safety went into the backcountry and airlifted the man.

Local official report the skier was with a group when he fell a “significant” distance around 1:00pm near Mount Superior. The cause of the fall is not yet specified but officials have confirmed it was not an avalanche.

The Utah Department of Public Safety helicopter brought the man down from the mountain around 2:20pm and he was transferred into a LifeFlight medical chopper and flown to the hospital. Little Cottonwood Road was closed in both directions between Alta and Snowbird during the rescue operation and opened shortly there after. The skier is reported to be in critical condition.
