Mammoth Mountain reopened this morning following two day of closures due to avalanche danger. The initial closure on December 26th came after two ski patrollers were caught in an avalanche on Lincoln Mountain at 7:30am (prior to the resort’s scheduled opening). One of the ski patrollers suffered serious injuries and was transported out of the area for further care, the second patroller was evaluated with possible broken bones.
Mammoth reopened this morning with lower mountain lift operations only. With deep snow on the mountain, resort officials ask guests to ski and ride with a partner, keep your group in sight, and avoid tree wells.
“With this much new snow, Tree Wells and Snow Immersion Suffocation (SIS) are real hazards. During storm cycles like this, “no friends on a powder day” needs to take a back seat. Stick with your crew. The Golden Rules: Communicate constantly – Keep eyes on your partner at all times. Hoot, yell, and let them know where you are. Avoid the base of trees – Give them plenty of space. Stick to groomed runs to reduce risk. If your partner goes down, do not leave. Call for help (760.934.0611) and clear their airway immediately. Ride safe and look out for each other.”
