Colorado โ It’s been a rough start to the winter for many ski resorts in the U.S., as a lack of snow is a concern for operators. One example of this is in Steamboat, which is typically known as one of Colorado’s snowiest ski resorts. This winter, they’ve relied on snowmaking to open a limited amount of terrain.
As demonstrated in this video by Mark Gampper, he shares a crowded run on Steamboat from earlier this week. It should be noted that the passengers in the cabin incorrectly claim this chaos is happening on Heavenly Glaze. The actual trail name is Heavently Daze. To their defense, Heavenly Glaze is a better trail name.
I visited Steamboat Resort last winter, and I remember Heavenly Daze being a crowded trail. However, when I was there, there was much more snow, so the trail had wider coverage, spreading people out. Ultimately, I feel like this video is the perfect encapsulation of the struggles that Western ski resorts in the US have faced this month.
As of Boxing Day, Steamboat has 42 runs open and 18 lifts operating. As of the morning of December 26th, Steamboat has only recieved 39″ of natural snowfall this winter. However, notable snow totals are expected in the days ahead.
