11-year-old Mickey Watkins

Really neat story out of Minnesota where grade school kid who was curious about of a group of snowboarders in the neighborhood ended up on the cover The Snowboarder’s Journal.

Last February 11-year-old Mickey Watkins was playing near his home in north Minneapolis when he saw group of snowboarders and photographers taking pictures near a stair set. Curious about what they were up to young Mickey approached and struck up a conversation. California-based photographer Mike Yoshida explained they were shooting for pictures for a brand and Mickey decided he wanted in on the fun. He didn’t have a snowboard but he did manage to find the lid of a plastic tote box that he stood up on and road down the hill next to the pro snowboarders.

Yoshida turned his lens towards Mickey and captured his impromptu session. He posted the images to his Instagram and the editors at The Snowboarder’s Journal were so taken with purity of the moment they decided the image belonged on the cover of the magazine.

Since its release snowboard brands have gotten in touch with Mickey Watkins and provided him all the gear he needs to get out on the hill for real. Mickey also now has a season pass to Afton Alps where he will be starting up snowboard lessons this winter.

Cheers to Mickey! Here is his cover photo. Amazing!
